To provide the necessary support to mentoring efforts across Kansas, a statewide mentoring conference should be held that covers the critical national and state issues related to mentoring. Kansas Mentors Council of Mentors, which is composed of mentoring experts from across the state, will oversee the curriculum development of this conference. The grant recipient will be responsible for the administration of the conference including booking a location, hiring presenters, developing conference materials, promoting the conference, and other duties necessary for a successful event. The grant recipient will also need to coordinate with Kansas Mentors to identify the appropriate topics and presenters for the conference. The conference should be held in April 2009. Eligible applicants must submit a plan detailing how a conference administered by their organizations would be the most beneficial to both established and developing mentoring programs in Kansas. The plan should also include a budget for the event including presenter fees and funds for a nationally known keynote speaker, promotional strategies to attract attendees, and possible dates and locations for the event. Applications must be received by June 26, 2008. They can be submitted electronically to mentor@kdhe.state.ks.us or by mail to 1000 S.W. Jackson, Suite 570, Topeka, KS 66612-1368.

Grant Applications are due June 26, 2008
In an effort to provide every young Kansan (ages 5 to 18) access to a quality mentoring relationship, statewide financial support is needed for communities wishing to start a mentoring program and to sustain or expand existing programs.  Kansas Mentors (KM) defines mentoring as a consistent, structured, stable relationship between youth and a caring role model(s) that: (1) involves regular, ongoing, and ideally face-to-face meetings and  (2) is focused on developing the character, capabilities and confidence of the young person(s).  Applicants whose programs fit this definition are eligible to apply.  KM’s mission is to provide all young Kansans access to a caring and quality mentor. Eligible applicants must submit proposals that address how their program/project/initiative will help KM to pursue this mission.  This may include but is not limited to expanding mentoring opportunities into communities that are currently without access to mentoring programs or to communities that are underserved, providing an innovative approach to help with mentoring program staff retention, developing an effective volunteer recruitment plan, or improving existing mentoring efforts. Click on the links below for the grant application requirements, contractual requirements and budget form.  Applications must be received by June 26, 2008.  They can be submitted electronically to mentor@kdhe.state.ks.us or by mail to 1000 S.W. Jackson, Suite 570, Topeka, KS 66612-1368.
