![]() Choose Your Role: What does it mean to mentor? Mentors go by many names. They are friends. They are teachers. They are coaches. They are heroes. Though they may be known as many things, they all have one thing in common—they care. And that makes all the difference. Being a mentor is not about being an expert. It’s about giving a little of your time to enrich a child’s life and your own. It is estimated that 50,000 Kansas children are in need of mentors. These children are not looking for someone famous; they just want someone who cares about them. Someone who teaches them the traits they need to be successful, and encourages them to live up to their potentials. After all, people who grow up under adverse circumstances and yet still become successful--- all have one thing in common--- at a critical point in their childhood they had a positive relationship with an adult. Whether it’s through playing sports, working on homework together, or just having a conversation, there are many ways to have a positive impact on a child’s life. Several opportunities exist for you to become involved for as much or as little as your schedule allows. Imagine how different their lives would have been if Amelia Earhart never learned to fly, if Barry Sanders never ran for a touchdown, or if Dwight Eisenhower never went to West Point. Yet, thousands of Kansas kids grow up never knowing what they could be. Though our backgrounds may differ, we both consider ourselves fortunate to have been blessed with adults in our lives who built upon the values instilled in us by our parents. We believe every Kansas child deserves someone he/she can look up to and that all Kansas parents deserve help pushing back the threats from popular culture so they can instill in their children the values that lead to a good life. Moms and dads shouldn't be alone in the fight to raise children the right way. The Kansas Mentors web site is a place where interested adults across the state can find programs in their area where they can volunteer their time as a mentor or find a program to fit their child or student’s needs. Though Kansas Mentors will not be creating a new state-wide mentoring program, we will help communities without mentoring opportunities find the resources and tools they need to start their own programs. By working with local school systems, communities, businesses and various service organizations across the state, Kansas Mentors will help to bring supportive and caring adults who share our values into the lives of all our children Here in our state, the Kansas Mentors initiative will help make the vision of a mentor for every Kansas child a reality. We invest in our children's schools and get involved in their lives because we care about our children and want them to reach their God-given potential.
